Isaiah 50:4
“The Sovereign LORD has given me his words of wisdom, so that I know how to comfort the weary.” — Isaiah 50:4 (NLT)
There are times in life when a person can become weary, discouraged, and uncertain about the future. Sometimes, what we need most is not a material gift or an immediate solution, but a word of encouragement or assurance—a timely word that reminds us that God has not forgotten us.
Isaiah 50:4 gives us a beautiful picture of a servant who has learned to listen to God. The servant receives wisdom from God and is then able to speak appropriately to those who are weary or exhausted. This reminds us that God can use His people to bring encouragement, direction, correction, blessing, and even warning to others.
God Uses Those Who Are Aligned With Him
Throughout Scripture, we see that God chooses people to carry His message. These people are not necessarily perfect or extraordinary by human standards. What distinguishes them is their willingness to submit themselves to God. We read in Isaiah 6:8, Isaiah responding to God that he is available to be sent.
A Relationship With God
Those whom God uses must cultivate a close relationship with Him. There is an intimacy in the way God communicates with His servants.
Isaiah 50:4 speaks about God awakening His servant “morning by morning” and opening his understanding. This suggests a life of continually listening to God.
We cannot consistently give people what we do not have and not received from God.
If we want to speak words that strengthen the weary, we must spend time in God’s presence. If we want to bring hope to discouraged people, we must allow God’s Word to fill our own hearts first.
The Words We Speak Can Have Consequences
A message from God is not always easy to receive. Sometimes God sends a word of blessing; at other times, He sends a warning or correction.
Eli provides a sobering example. As high priest, Eli knew about the sinful behaviour of his sons, who were serving as priests, yet he failed to restrain them adequately. Their actions brought serious consequences upon themselves and their family. Eventually, Eli and his sons died (1 Samuel 4:10-11, 15-18).
This reminds us that God’s messages should never be treated casually. When God gives us a word to speak, we must deliver it faithfully and with humility. We should never manipulate God’s Word to please people, nor should we avoid a difficult truth simply because it may be uncomfortable.
The messenger is responsible for faithfully delivering what God has entrusted to him.
The Good News That Brings Joy
Not every message from God is a warning. Some of the greatest messages in Scripture brought extraordinary joy.
Consider the shepherds in Luke 2:8–11. They were watching their flocks at night when an angel appeared and announced the birth of Yahshuah Messiah (Jesus Christ).
It was good news of great joy: the Saviour had been born.
Imagine what that message meant to humanity. The promised Saviour had come. God had not abandoned His people. Hope had entered the world through Jesus Christ.
This is the heart of Christian encouragement. We do not encourage people with empty words or false promises. We point them to Jesus—the One who is able to give hope when circumstances seem hopeless.
A Personal Experience of Encouragement
I remember one day when my wife noticed that I seemed low in spirit. She did not say much to me about it. Instead, when traveling in public transport, she simply sent me Hebrews 12:2 to read.
That Scripture spoke directly to my situation and lifted my spirit.
It reminded me to look away from my circumstances and focus on Jesus.
That experience taught me something important: sometimes a simple Scripture sent at the right moment can become a powerful message of encouragement.
We may not always know what another person is going through. Someone sitting beside us may be carrying a burden that we cannot see. A colleague, friend, family member, church member, or neighbour may simply need someone to speak a word of hope.
We should therefore be sensitive to God’s prompting.
Jesus Invites the Weary
Jesus understands the condition of the weary heart. He gives this beautiful invitation:
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (NLT)
What a wonderful message for anyone who feels exhausted by life’s circumstances.
Perhaps you have been praying for a long time and have not yet seen the answer. Perhaps you have asked God for help, but the situation appears unchanged.
Do not conclude that God’s silence means that He has forgotten you.
Delay is not necessarily denial.
God’s timing is different from ours. There are seasons when He allows us to wait, grow, trust, and walk by faith before we see the answer.
Keep Walking by Faith
One of the most difficult aspects of faith is continuing to trust God when we cannot see what He is doing.
Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 5:7:
“For we live by believing and not by seeing.” — NLT
Faith means continuing to trust God even when circumstances appear contrary to what we are praying for.
If you are weary today, don’t give up.
If you have prayed and the answer has not yet come, continue praying.
If you have been waiting for God’s intervention, continue trusting Him.
If you cannot see the way forward, continue walking with Him.
God may be preparing the answer, preparing you for the answer, or preparing the circumstances around you.
God Will Send Help at the Right Season
Isaiah 50:4 challenges us not only to receive encouragement from God but also to become instruments of encouragement to others.
Someone around you may be weary today.
They may need a Scripture.
They may need a phone call.
They may need someone to listen.
They may need to hear, “Don’t give up. God has not forgotten you.”
Ask God to make you sensitive to the needs of those around you. Ask Him to give you the right words at the right time.
And if you are the one who is weary, remember that Jesus is inviting you to come to Him.
Your present circumstances are not the end of your story.
God will send help at the right season.
Continue to be faithful. Continue to trust Him. Continue to walk by faith and not by sight.
And when God gives you an opportunity, speak a word of encouragement. Your words, guided by God’s wisdom, may be exactly what someone needs to hear today.
